Tell Us: How Safe Do You Feel Along the Ohlone Greenway?

Yesterday's shooting where two teenage boys were shot by two other other teenagers on the BART path has left many worried. Are you concerned now about using the greenway?

A shooting that occurred on the BART path, also known as the Ohlone Greenway, near the El Cerrito Library Wednesday afternoon has left many readers concerned about traveling between Stockton and Lincoln avenues.

Two teen-aged males, believed to be high school students, were shot by two other other teenage males shortly before 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, according to El Cerrito police.

Both El Cerrito High School and Fairmont Elementary School were placed on temporary lockdown. Stockton Avenue also was closed for several hours at the BART path and didn't reopen until around 7 p.m. according to a reader.

The two suspects involved in the shooting escaped, going east on Stockton, police said. They were described as teenaged African-American males in dark clothing.

In light of the incident, readers have left the following responses:

"Ah yes, the oh-so-lonely greenway. Avoid at all costs," one reader commented.

"EC is new east Oakland," another said.

We want to hear from you...

How do you feel after this incident?

Do you think Ohlone Greenway is less safe to travel on now?

If so, what are alternate routes you plan to take?

I have no idea if the shooting was drug related or not. But, given the number of drug deals that happen in the park behind the school and library, I'm not particularly surprised. I used to walk through there as part of my commute home, and I never felt safe.

I think how safe I feel will be very strongly influenced by whether we find out what the motive was in this crime. Were the victims random encounters? Or was that a drug deal or something?
Debbie January 24, 2013 at 01:50 pm
That is a total drug magnet area. The benches in the park adjacent have all kinds of drug paraphernalia litter. Crack vials, blunt wrappers, alcohol bottles etc. Clear cut the tall vegetation on the path, get rid of the benches and make the park a fenced community garden and it will make a difference. Also put a camera on this stretch. It is my understanding that the Bart path is a favored gang initiation territory for high school kids. So the solution is to make it crime proof. This is possible guys. There are landscapers that specialize in crime detecting design. It will be worth the money. And solvable- remember this is targeted crime as well not random or psychotic.

To Debbie's comments, I'd like to add that stepped up bike patrols through there, especially after the middle and high schools get out and in the morning hours as school starts, would be a great help.

I walk along the path near the shooting almost every day, and I mostly see people walking their dogs, going on runs, riding their bikes, or walking to work. Normal stuff. The only time I see anyone remotely dodgy is in the hours after school lets out, but maybe I'm just stereotyping teenagers as thugs. Not everyone wearing a hoodie is up to no good.

Although I DO NOT believe El Cerrito is the new East Oakland, we do like any other city have our problems and unfortunately the Ohlone Greenway is a hotbed. I live directly behind the path and I constantly hear and see the crimes listed in Debbie's response. The solutions Debbie and Tim listed seem reasonable AND doable! How can we as a community get involved and get it done???

any place that is isolated and can't be seen easily to the public is a good spot for a crime. Why is that surprising to anyone?

Reader Charley says: "I have been running, often in the early evening, on the greenway at least once a week for over 30 years. Only once, about a month ago, was I worried. A teen ager came out of a group and engaged me verbally. I challenged him to race me for a few yards. He did, and beat me easily. Then he left me alone. So one uncomfortable incident in over 1000 runs isn't too bad."

Debbie's got the right idea. I bike along there. There are stretches of the pathway south of Stockton where the vegetation is absurdly high, overgrown, and close to the path. I notice they are widening the path in Albany as they do the retrofit work. When the retrofit work gets to that stretch south of Stockton, how do we ensure that the changes made make the area safer? Can someone research & post the names & email addresses of the folks to contact who can effect change?

Well I just walked that stretch of path this afternoon with stroller and dog and saw lots of people jogging, biking and walking it. I say the more we use it the better - besides now seems like the safest time post crime with heavy patrolling. I felt like walking it to give it good energy and out of due course to the young victims.

I, too, made a point of walking along the path this afternoon. Let's not let this become a no-man's land at any time of day!

I won't let my school age son walk it without an adult. If we're on our bikes and stay out past dark, we tend to avoid the Greenway since I've heard of robberies along it. Otherwise, I'll take it during the day.

I was mugged for my purse by a hoodlum exactly in that spot about 4 years ago. I'll never walk the Ohlone Greenway again, not even with another person.
CJ January 25, 2013 at 01:28 am
I avoid the Greenway in the after school hours when there are lots more kids around and suspicious activity going on at times. Any other time in daylight I feel totally safe and walk and run along there alone and with my kids.
That stretch is crazily overgrown -- I have mentioned it to our of state friends when we discuss biking safety and such as a stretch of our local bike path that desperately needs improvement as having overgrowth right up to the edge of a path is never a safe thing.

I've had 2 guys try to grab my purse off me as I walked home at night there and on another occasion, a guy on a bike followed me home. I don't use the path at night anymore.
I for one am concerned about this activity being so close to an easily accessible elementary school.

You're an irresponsible parent if you let your kid use that trail now. You're on notice -- there are savages with guns, who WILL shoot, on the Ohlone Greenway.

Unless the incidents are now increasing.
Mark Kay January 25, 2013 at 05:48 pm
Never felt unsafe anywhere. I go to all the local green spaces and parks with my two dogs. This includes many parks in Richmond. There was one in San Pablo though......
Mark Kay January 25, 2013 at 05:49 pm
I agree. Use it more and send out good community feelings.
Mark Kay January 25, 2013 at 05:51 pm
Drug magnet area? Please don't be hysterical.
Another EC Mom January 26, 2013 at 01:04 pm
I use the greenway a lot but I don't always feel safe on certain stretches of it. I wish EC would clear out some of the vegetation too. It feels much safer down in Albany where it's more open. I realize some of that is because it runs next to a road. But to answer the question, no I don't really feel safe on certain parts of the EC portion.
B. January 31, 2013 at 02:07 pm
I'm never going down there again. I'm all for making it better, but I'm not paving the way to safety with myself or my 2 year old. This kind of crap makes me want to move away.

Some in Richmond do not agree with your viewpoint. http://www.tombutt.com/forum/2013/1305010.htmRead More “I have never seen a public servant work harder for anything than WCCUSD School Board member Charles Ramsey worked to complete the District’s ambitious program to rebuild or upgrade every single school in the system.” I wonder how this court decision will impact WCCUSD. http://www.contracostatimes.com/breaking-news/ci_23447723/state-high-court-denies-review-alamedas-measure-h State high court denies review in Alameda's Measure H suit The ruling in the Alameda case is expected to have far reaching consequences for school districts throughout the state as similar lawsuits over parcel tax structures have been filed in Yolo, Contra Costa and Los Angeles counties.

The WCCUSD needs to hear what thoughts citizens have on this matter. Currently, the WCCUSD boardRead More meetings have placed the Public Comment period late in the meeting, making it difficult for folks to comment. I have started a petition for modifying the agenda. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/let-us-speak-wccusd/ In Hercules, we are still awaiting a correction to the taxation process, that apparently we are due a higher percentage as explained by Councilman Romero here http://pinole-hercules.patch.com/groups/opinion/p/2012-hercules-dan-romero Wouldn't it be ironic if Mr. Ramsey get's his wish before the citizens of Hercules get theirs?
