Letter: Buy Coffee – Fight Climate Change

This letter to the editor from El Cerrito High student Kai Marshland urges support for the largest Carrotmob project so far – to buy enough coffee from Thanksgiving Coffee for the company to be able to transport coffee with wind power.

To the Editor:

Do you know anyone who likes coffee? Do you want to improve the world? What if, by buying coffee, you could? Luckily, you have the option to do this right now, with Carrotmob. Carrotmob is an organization dedicated to the idea of buying items in exchange for a promise to green the establishment – it’s like the opposite of a boycott.

Thanksgiving Coffee, a family run company that already uses sustainable practices, will transport coffee with wind power, if we can buy enough coffee. They need to sell $150,000 before they can fund the endeavor. The purchase of that much coffee will show that consumers care about the environment. Previously Carrotmob has only taken on a variety of small businesses – this will be their largest endeavor so far. With your help, Carrotmob can target larger and larger companies, pointing to this as an example, and make a larger difference. You were going to buy coffee anyway; why not contribute to a good cause?
