Relay for Life Coming Saturday to Cerrito Vista

Cerrito Vista Park on Moeser Lane will host a celebration like no other this weekend. Beginning at 10 am Saturday (July 20) and continuing nonstop for 24 hours (but considerably quieter overnight) is the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The event is a mix of celebration of survivors, cancer prevention and treatment awareness, and fundraiser.

According to the event’s website, as of 11:40 am Thursday, July 18, the event had already raised $26,324.34, with 15 teams and 182 participants signed up. Teams include the Gauchos, associated with El Cerrito High School,  Playland Pals from Playland-Not-at-the-Beach, and “Support El Cerrito Public Safety-Snuff Out and Arrest Cancer,” whose members includes officers and others associated with the city’s police department.

At the core of the event is the goal of each team having at least one member walking or running the course loop at all times, but there is much more to the gathering. According to the event website, the survivors lap will begin at 10:15 am and the luminaria ceremony at 8:45 pm. The site says dr D playing rock, fund and blues will play at noon, LuvStoned performing R&B, funk, hip-hop and disco at 2:30 pm, and surf band the DelMars at 6 pm.
