A female feline and then a surf scoter once entered my life. They each changed me and changed how I think about the creatures in whose midst we all live.

Amy and I shared a home for 18 years. Captain became a friend over the several months that I visited him daily along the shore of the San Francisco Bay.

I was privileged to be with Amy and with Captain at the end of their individual lives on earth.

Each uniquely opened my heart.
