Stash's Palaver: Roundup of El Cerrito Happenings

RabbitEARS moves. Chipotle opens. Encorecake cupcakes. Stege is 100. Stockton Avenue Art Strolls resume. Round-Up. French Connection. AC Transit and Buy American. Richmond Economic Summit.

Hippity hop. Judy Hardin is moving her RabbitEARS from one end of Fairmount Avenue to the other. When you read this the new address will be 6331 Fairmount (between Kearney and San Pablo).

Chipotle Mexican Grill, the new burrito emporium in town, opened for business at 11 a.m. on April 24. The chain has a loyal following. They’re located at Carlson and San Pablo.

The word is the former Star Education Supply building at 10512 San Pablo Avenue, now being renovated, will become a dance and art studio. Old timers recall Maxwell Office Supply in that space.

The city’s new bakery, Encorecake at 10178 San Pablo, is now open for business, daily 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Custom cupcakes are a specialty.

Celebrating a century of service is Stege Sanitary District. Saturday, May 18, is their big day of festivities including an open house, equipment displays, along with music, food, and giveaways. The event will take place at the top of Schmidt Lane (by the recycling center) between 1-4 p.m.

Stockton Avenue art strolls are back on the calendar with the first one of the year on May 10th from 6-9 p.m. Then monthly every second Friday through September 13th. Enjoy art, food, and music, along upper Stockton Avenue.

It’s Round-Up time. Contra Costa Marketplace magazine will offer discounted display advertising for local business in the special El Cerrito section of the June issue. Deadline is May 8th; call the publication at (510) 223-1800 soon. The Round-Up section has been an advertising feature for the El Cerrito Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Popeye Doyle, the gruff NYPD detective, is on the big screen Thursday, May 9th at 7 p.m., for another Friends of the Cerrito Theater classic: “The French Connection.” This flick has a great chase on the streets of New York. Get your tickets early at the Rialto Cerrito. Last month the theater added an additional screening of “Airplane” due to heavy ticket sales, but there’s no guarantee that will happen again.

They’re catching on. From a press release: “On March 28, AC Transit launched new 40-foot buses that are locally made…” [emphasis added]. The transit operator purchased 65 buses made by the Gillig Corporation of Hayward. This comes after years of purchasing buses made overseas. Score a win for “buy America,” local workers, and our economy.

Congressman John Garamendi was promoting his “make it in America” plan when he spoke to our Chamber in October 2010. Maybe this is a result of his initiative.

Showing our flags. Two members of the El Cerrito Chamber of Commerce, El Cerrito Royale and Premier Graphics, will share a table at the Richmond Economic Summit and Job Fair on May 9th at the Richmond Auditorium. We’ll be there from 4:30-7 p.m., so stop by for a visit and free gifts. Get more information from our friends at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.
