Art and Craft For All

Meet 4 more incredibly talented and diverse artisans working in blown glass, loomed beadwork, mixed media assemblage and abstract landscape painting, at the ArtFirst! Holiday Show and Sale.

Without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the other artisans in the ArtFirst! Holiday Show and Saleas promised in my previous post and the one before that

Beka Brayer is  a mixed media assemblage artist. Beka says that her goal "is to breathe new life into intriguing old or found objects." Beka has also published a limited edition hand embellished book entitled "Art of Whimsey". She has contributed works for a wide range of fundraising benefits and has shown at ArtSpan, City Art Cooperative, Mission Artists United, and Studio 333.

Glass blower Holly Wallace, formerly of Ruby Glass Works, is currently an exhibiting member of Berkeley's oldest art cooperative, ACCI Gallery on Shattuck Avenue. Her work has been shown and sold at SFMOMA, Gumps, Celebration of Craftswomen, and many other galleries, shows and museums.  Holly describes glass blowing as "the whirling dervish of the art world. It is a juggling act with fire and form."

Victoria Veedell paints vibrant and colorful abstract landscapes. In her words, she "captures the essence of nature by examining the effects of light on form in the natural world." Victoria's paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and art centers, and are in many private and corporate collections.

Julie Long Gallegos creates hand beaded jewelry and accessories, including purses. Julie finds inspiration for her designs in Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, California Decorative Style, Art Deco, the Wiener Werkstatte, African art and Native American beadwork. Her Klimt “Kiss” cuff bracelet and “Coral Snake” lariat appeared in Lark Publications’ Showcase 500 Beaded Jewelry book (2012).

The ArtFirst! Show continues this Wednesday through Sunday (November 28 through December 2) at the Village Shops and Galleries, 10330 San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito (cross streets Eureka and Stockton), from noon to 6:00 pm.

This is my original blog post with all of the information about the show. Click here to visit the ArtFirst! website.

Was that what i heard in the middle of the night on Wednesday? I thought i was dreaming. It soundedRead More like some sort of loudspeaker.

Gee...are you SURE that alarm IS coming from Portola Middle School? Um...I suppose that you ARERead More sure! Yes...it IS turbo-annoying but I had assumed that it was some stupid car alarm.

Can you please be more specific about the nature of the problem for those of us who do not live inRead More the neighborhood?

Good thought, Julian.

I've spoken with him, he is educated, intelligent and articulate. He is also angry and sometimesRead More irrational. I dont know his story but his "street art" stands on its own legs. If you would like to help him, and yourself, buy and enjoy his art.

A neighbor of mine on Colusa tried to give him food when he was on Colusa, but he refused, so IRead More never tried. Dorothy, is that the shelter near the Berkeley Historical Society/Veteran's Building? Perhaps he would need a ride to it. Perhaps he's concerned about leaving his things there if he can't be there during the day. I'm afraid I don't know enough about it.

I did mention that I'm donating 10% of my royalties for "Midnight" to the EC's Open SpaceRead More fund, didn't I? I'm a Down-home Ten Percenter.

Lucy, I like the idea in principal, but in reality I think it would just give ECPD more work to do.Read More "People hanging out" doesn't necessarily translate to a friendly,fun-filled, folksy kind of environment. It *can* mean quite the reverse. "Midnight On the Ohlone" sounds like a new recording. Something like "I left my little babeeeeee, down by the tracks....and now I want her back....she's a needle in the haaaaaaay staaaaack...' Arhoolie awaits.

What a great idea for pocket parks!!! I am all for them. Instead of spening a big amount on oneRead More (which we don't have space anyway), I would like to see many mini parks of $20,000 along the Bart tracks. With more visibility and people hanging out, it would make Bart paths safer too, especially the one around fairmont park. Really mini pocket parks just needs some play structures, benches and tables there.
