Ebony + Ivory, Organized by Katie Johnson/Hanging By A Thread: The Work Of Lisa Solomon/City In Motion/The Wild Bunch

NIAD Art Center is
pleased to present Ebony + Ivory, a
group exhibition of recent work in black and white organized by Katie Johnson,
in the main gallery. On view in the annex space is Hanging By A Thread: The Work Of Lisa Solomon, work from the
Oakland artist that straddles the line between craft and art. In the Art Center
storefront will be City Life, a massive installation of urban life. And in the
backroom is The Wild Bunch, small
selection of very, very colorful abstractions.

All exhibitions
are on view May 2 through June 27, 2014 at NIAD’s gallery, 551 23rd Street in
Richmond. Opening reception is Saturday, May 3 from 12:30-3:00 pm. Yes, we will
again have a food truck and some awesome recorded music. So plan on hanging out
with us. For more information, please telephone (510) 620-0326 or visit www.niadart.org.

Black and white is the new
black. Well, maybe not, but they certainly look great together. With “Ebony +
Ivory” we’ve rounded up a group of work that is just that. Okay, maybe a few
pieces have another color tossed in, but you know what we’re talking about.

The exhibition is organized by
Gallery Assistant Katie Johnson and features work from Marlon Mullen, Deatra
Colbert, Eddie Braught, Felecia Griffin, Tony Pedemonte, Peter Harris, Jonathan
Velazquez, Lacee King, Kevin Randolph, Beverly Trieber and Jonathan Valdivias.

Hanging By A Thread: The Work Of Lisa Solomon

In the annex, we’re pleased to
present “Hanging By a Thread: The Work Of Lisa Solomon.” Profoundly interested
in the idea of hybridization, most likely sparked from the Oakland artist’s
happa heritage, Solomon’s mixed media works question the line between art and
craft, revolving thematically around domesticity, craft, and masculine and
feminine triggers.

City In Motion

Have you ever thought closely
about where you live? Well, we have. And we’ve built a massive installation,
“City In Motion,” that rounds up all of the elements of urban life and puts
them on display in the storefront. The installation, in no particular scale,
harkening back to the early work of Red Grooms is a lively and slightly
off-kilter recreation – with everything from bike shops to factories to
billboards and fireplugs, it even features NIAD Art Center. In conjunction with
“City In Motion,” NIAD will publish a free chapbook, “I Love Living In The
City.”

The Wild Bunch

Black and white certainly makes an elegant palette, but
in the gallery’s backroom we’re offering “The Wild Bunch,” a selection of
over-heated (at least on the color front) work from Linda Stewart, Angela
Rogers, Deatra Colbert and Phyllis Carr.
