Weekend Things: Secret Stairs, Caliban, Acoustic Blues, History Exhibit and More

Head over to Solano Avenue to learn more about the secret stairways in your neighborhood, then check out all the music events around town, a history celebration in Richmond and a talk on taking part in your government.

FRIDAY


Charles Fleming has written a book about secret stairs in Los Angeles, and now he's turned his attention to the East Bay. With many secret stairways around El Cerrito, Kensington, Albany, Berkeley and Oakland, this event promises to be an eye-opening experience for those who live near these hidden, but very public, stepped paths.

Berkeley West Edge Opera presents an original production with a plot that picks up where Shakespeare's The Tempest left off. Come hear renowned tenor John Duykers in the part of Caliban, who drunkenly fights for his land and his love.

SATURDAY


This may be The Lineups' last show so don't miss this chain-gang take on Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughn and many more classic rock artists. Perhaps you can even find out what they did to earn themselves that name.

SUNDAY


Richmond and El Cerrito go way back in terms of history, and this exhibit entitled Richmond Day at the Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, August 7, 1915 will be of interest to any local history buff. Enjoy music by a local student group as well as a old-time music group, the LMP Trio.

Dr. Arthur Blaustein is a professor of community development and public policy at UC Berkeley, and he has written Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport: The Ultimate Volunteer Handbook, a practical guide to playing a role in your government and community. Blaustein will discuss his book and ideas in this next installment of the Summer Social Action Forum series.
