Patch Picks: Five Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

This week we pulled together a list of local events geared toward celebrating or volunteering for Earth Day.

Earth Day, a day in which we can take action to improve our natural habitat, comes every year on April 22. Though the City of El Cerrito held its official Earth Day celebration a week early this year on April 16, there are several other events this weekend to observe the special day for Earth that began in 1970.

  • Friends of Five Creeks and Transition Albany are hosting the second annual Earth Day Walk along Cerrito Creek and on Albany Hill on Friday, April 22. Meet at on San Pablo Avenue and Carlson Boulevard in El Cerrito at 6 p.m.
  • Sustainable-living workshops, food and craft booths, free electronic waste drop-off and more will be featured at Berkeley Earth Day Saturday, April 23, noon to 5 p.m. at the Civic Center Park, located at Allston and Martin Luther King Jr. ways.
  • You can help East Bay Regional Parks at Convert Clothing, a new boutique at 1809B Fourth Street in Berkeley, April 24 from 2 - 6 p.m. Free giveaways include wine and treats from the store. Convert is partnering with Nudie Jeans for the event to benefit East Bay Regional Parks.
  • The City of Albany and the Watershed Project are sponsoring an Earth Day Shoreline Clean-Up April 23, 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are encouraged to go to the Albany Bulb for a cleanup at the foot of Buchanan Street. There will be games and art-making in addition to the clean-up efforts.
  • You can join the Watershed Project's Earth Day Creeks Challenge April 23, 9 a.m. to noon, by showing up at any of four locations to help clean up neighborhood creeks in Richmond, San Pablo or El Sobrante. Volunteers are urged to bring sturdy shoes, work gloves, and a water bottle.
