It's Been a Quiet Week in El Cerrito (63 Years Ago)

The front-page news in El Cerrito on this date in 1949 was not high drama. A hometown soldier had to repeat his German wedding. A high school senior won a statewide essay contest. Ben Parker motored through three states.

If you go to the  at El Cerrito City Hall and turn to the now yellowed front page of the weekly El Cerrito Journal for today, May 26, in 1949, you can find a snapshot of our community in its post-war growth years. Here are some of the actual headlines from the paper's front page, followed by our brief summaries of the articles:

Bride in Germany
At 2 Ceremonies

The first time Lt. Edward L. Wilson Jr. attempted to wed his future wife in Germany, it didn't stick. Uncle Sam said he had to do it again in front of U.S. Army chaplain. He met his future wife, Gladys, a a war department secretary from South Carolina, while serving with the U.S. Occupation Forces in Bamburg, near Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia.
