End of Days? Throw a 12-21-12 Party

Tick, tick, tick. Some folks fear doomsday is nigh – exactly a week from today with the end of the Mayan calendar, while scientists say Earth has some years left in her. Others say, hey, let's party!

There are rumors the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012. That's when a 5,125-year period known as the Long Count in the Mayan calendar supposedly comes to a close.

Dec. 21, 2012, essentially is the end of a cycle, like when you change the calendar in your kitchen on Jan. 1. But for those who take the most dramatic interpretation of the day, it has spurred fears of apocalypse, solar storms, meteors, polar realignments, UFOs and other doomsday predictions.

While conspiracy theorists are stocking up on supplies and survival gear and true believers are panicking, most will just recognize that the day is Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year.

And some have found a way embrace the day and whatever it may bring by throwing an End of the World Party.

The website Doomsday Party 2012 is advocating for a worldwide celebration extravaganza in case Dec. 21 really is the End of Days. Among the advice on the website: only invite people to your apocalyptic event who can help you fight off rioters and zombies. Good soundtrack options include R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)", Europe's "The Final Countdown", and Bad Religion's "Los Angeles Is Burning".

Cruise ships are destined for the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mayan region of Mexico. There, the Museo Maya de Cancun opened earlier this year and the Mexican government declared it Mundo Maya 2012, which melds education about the culture and tourism.

Of course, not everyone is ready to party. In Russia, the women incarcerated at a prison near the Chinese border grew so hysterical with fear that the nation's minister of emergency situations issued a statement reassuring the country that the world wasn't ending. There's even a live countdown until the appointed hour, 12-21-12 at 11:11 UTC—which is 8 hours ahead of West Coast time.

NASA published scientific explanations to diffuse the Mayan Calendar theory and other possible causes End of Days. For example, scientists say giant solar storms are not a threat. Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years, according to NASA.

Are you taking any precautions for 12-21-12 — just in case? Know anyone who is seriously worried?

Was that what i heard in the middle of the night on Wednesday? I thought i was dreaming. It soundedRead More like some sort of loudspeaker.

Gee...are you SURE that alarm IS coming from Portola Middle School? Um...I suppose that you ARERead More sure! Yes...it IS turbo-annoying but I had assumed that it was some stupid car alarm.

Good thought, Julian.

I've spoken with him, he is educated, intelligent and articulate. He is also angry and sometimesRead More irrational. I dont know his story but his "street art" stands on its own legs. If you would like to help him, and yourself, buy and enjoy his art.

A neighbor of mine on Colusa tried to give him food when he was on Colusa, but he refused, so IRead More never tried. Dorothy, is that the shelter near the Berkeley Historical Society/Veteran's Building? Perhaps he would need a ride to it. Perhaps he's concerned about leaving his things there if he can't be there during the day. I'm afraid I don't know enough about it.

I did mention that I'm donating 10% of my royalties for "Midnight" to the EC's Open SpaceRead More fund, didn't I? I'm a Down-home Ten Percenter.

Lucy, I like the idea in principal, but in reality I think it would just give ECPD more work to do.Read More "People hanging out" doesn't necessarily translate to a friendly,fun-filled, folksy kind of environment. It *can* mean quite the reverse. "Midnight On the Ohlone" sounds like a new recording. Something like "I left my little babeeeeee, down by the tracks....and now I want her back....she's a needle in the haaaaaaay staaaaack...' Arhoolie awaits.

What a great idea for pocket parks!!! I am all for them. Instead of spening a big amount on oneRead More (which we don't have space anyway), I would like to see many mini parks of $20,000 along the Bart tracks. With more visibility and people hanging out, it would make Bart paths safer too, especially the one around fairmont park. Really mini pocket parks just needs some play structures, benches and tables there.

Part Two..... If you are fortunate to own a TV and watch the flood of video of robberies atRead More convenience stores you can easily see that the cameras did nothing to prevent the crimes. The Tsarnaev brothers went to an ATM, all of which have cameras and made no attempt to cover their identity. I’m just saying that if indeed one wants to stem crime one needs to think it through instead of jumping to a wild-west position. art

Part One And of course with all the cameras at the Safeway, it has done so much to stop all theRead More ongoing crime there......So what is the discussion about here? Preventing street crime, or politically/religiously motivated terrorist crime? The article is a classic "Let's titillate with a banner about Islamic extremist jihad bombers, but the body will be about thug crime." These are two completely different issues and as such the author ought to go back and rethink this. It’s an irresponsible article. El Cerrito certainly has a thug crime problem that includes burglary and car theft break-ins. El Cerrito is not on ANYBODY's political map. Most native born Bay Area reisdents can’t find it on a map let alone a lunatic bent on making a martyr’s statement, Islamic , Christian or otherwise. If you look at the other crime headlines in the patch page you will see that were robberies also on the BART path, Sketchers, and Denny’s all of which are heavily “surveilled”. The Tsarnaev brothers are young enough to completely know that everyone and their grandmother has a picture phone, and cameras are everywhere in Boston, and YET they did what they did. SO… to “blanket statement” that all this camera surveillance has stopped the “perps” is simple thinking at best. It is helpful in solving crimes AFTER the fact.

That was one crime that caused then-Chief Kirkland to push for the new law. Another question wouldRead More be: how many crimes have been prevented because certain businesses are required to have video recording? Perps know they're on camera in EC.
