El Cerrito's Namesake -- As It Looked in 1861

This photo of Albany Hill was taken from the Berkeley foothills in the same year that the Civil War began.

El Cerrito, which means "the little hill" in Spanish, was named after Albany Hill. This photograph of Albany's prominent hill comes from the archives of the El Cerrito Historical Society, courtesy of Louis L. Stein. It was taken in 1861 by Carlton E. Watkins from low Berkeley hills looking west.
