 Black Tuesday, in the U.S., refers to Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1929, part of the great Stock Market crash of 1929. The crash is said to have marked the start of the Great Depression. Patch Tuesday is the second Tuesday of every month when Microsoft releases patches for their products. Shrove Tuesday (also called Mardi Gras - or Fat Tuesday) precedes the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. Super Tuesday is the day many US states hold their presidential primaries.   1. The City's Environmental Quality Committee subcommittee (215-4354) will meet tonight at 7 at City Hall. Among the agenda items will be gauging the interest in and development of green requirements for organizations that rent City space and a climate action plan update. This is your opportunity to tell the City how you think El Cerrito should handle the upcoming years of post-peak oil when we all will have to change the way we live and move to and fro.
  2. Getting up early can be worth it, if you decide to attend the meeting tomorrow morning from 8 to 9 at Pasta Pomodoro in El Cerrito Plaza. This group is a great source of information and networking of small businesses.
  3. Conta Costa County Health Services (232-4681) is offering a program titled  today at 2 p.m. Anna Chang, a senior peer counselor, will be the speaker at this free presentation at Eskaton Hazel Shirley Manor, 11025 San Pablo Ave.
  4. The Evening Book Club aka will discuss "An Artist of the Floating World" by Kazuo Oshiguro. This group will meet tonight at 7. The Dec. 14 meeting will discuss "Out Stealing Horses," by Per Petterson. Don't miss a chance to spend an evening with like-minded people who read!
  5. And it's book again, but for younger people at and schools. They are putting on book fairs this week, which will be a great place to buy holiday gifts. Tehiyah (233-3013) begins its Hanukkah Book Fair today and will keep it open until Friday. Windrush School (970-7580) is holding its Hickelbee's Book Fair; proceeds will support its library. The Windrush fair will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Hickelbee's is an independent book store that specializes in books for children and young adults.
