Council Approves New Sales Tax (65 Years Ago)

This week in 1946 found the City Council giving thumbs up to a city sales tax and speed signs and thumbs down to a beer and wine permit on Fairmount Avenue. The state Fire Marshall said okay to plans for El Cerrito Pre-School.

The front page of the weekly El Cerrito Journal 65 years ago this week carried a banner headline across top of the page above the masthead, announcing the initial City Council approval of a new idea, a city sales tax:

Sales Tax Will Net City $35,000

Council Protests Beer-Wine License

The City Council voted to protest the application to sell beer and wine by Brensel and Atwell at 7502 Fairmount Avenue. Councilman R. Ward Crary said the permit would cause a police problem because of the establishment's location near two schools.

Speed Signs Approved

The city's safety plan "swung into high gear" when the City Council approved painting street signs to show the speed limit of 25 mph. Also approved were signs marking school crosswalks. And Councilman R. Ward Crary, who served also as commissioner of public works, told the council that his department was embarking on a long-range plan to improve the city's sidewalks.

El Cerrito Pre-School Plan Approved

The state Fire Marshall gave his approval to building plans for El Cerrito Pre-School, according to Mrs. Morris Pool, president of the Mother's Club, sponsor of the project.
