Visions for Vacancies: Sugar Cone Cafe

What would you like to see at the former Sugar Cone Cafe in Kensington?

To the surprise of many, Sugar Cone Cafe in Kensington closed on Christmas Eve. The previous owners are trying to sell the business and we would like to get your ideas on how to make this shop better.

Sugar Cone Cafe was located at 303 Arlington Ave. in Kensington’s Arlington Shops shopping district. The Arlington Shops is home to businesses like Inn Kensington, Young’s Market, The Arlington, and Arlington Wine & Spirits.

I had a nice, long discussion with the owner of Sugar Cone Cafe, Andrea Tung.  The main reason she decided to close it was the amount of hours it required from her took too much time away from her young kids. Many people don’t realize how exhausting it is to run a small family- business.

This shop was a labor of love for her. She loved seeing the neighborhood kids come after school to get an ice cream and have a safe place to hang out. She prefers to keep those qualities, a business that serves the community, the families and the kids. In addition to selling ice cream they also sold other desserts, sandwiches, and coffee. But with running the day-to-day operations it left her with little energy to advertise it as well as she wanted to.

She thinks some changes need to be made to make it really work. One idea she has to give the new owner(s) a better work/life balance is to have it run by a co-op, a group of non-working Kensington/El Cerrito parents, for example. Not only could they spread the responsibilities but they could also combine their talents.

Perhaps the shop needs to sell additional food items to generate more revenue and compensate for the slow ice cream sales in the winter. Or perhaps this space needs to change direction entirely.

We’d like to hear what you would like to see here.

Was that what i heard in the middle of the night on Wednesday? I thought i was dreaming. It soundedRead More like some sort of loudspeaker.

I've spoken with him, he is educated, intelligent and articulate. He is also angry and sometimesRead More irrational. I dont know his story but his "street art" stands on its own legs. If you would like to help him, and yourself, buy and enjoy his art.

A neighbor of mine on Colusa tried to give him food when he was on Colusa, but he refused, so IRead More never tried. Dorothy, is that the shelter near the Berkeley Historical Society/Veteran's Building? Perhaps he would need a ride to it. Perhaps he's concerned about leaving his things there if he can't be there during the day. I'm afraid I don't know enough about it.

I did mention that I'm donating 10% of my royalties for "Midnight" to the EC's Open SpaceRead More fund, didn't I? I'm a Down-home Ten Percenter.

Lucy, I like the idea in principal, but in reality I think it would just give ECPD more work to do.Read More "People hanging out" doesn't necessarily translate to a friendly,fun-filled, folksy kind of environment. It *can* mean quite the reverse. "Midnight On the Ohlone" sounds like a new recording. Something like "I left my little babeeeeee, down by the tracks....and now I want her back....she's a needle in the haaaaaaay staaaaack...' Arhoolie awaits.

What a great idea for pocket parks!!! I am all for them. Instead of spening a big amount on oneRead More (which we don't have space anyway), I would like to see many mini parks of $20,000 along the Bart tracks. With more visibility and people hanging out, it would make Bart paths safer too, especially the one around fairmont park. Really mini pocket parks just needs some play structures, benches and tables there.
