A Century Ago — The Same Family Enterprise That Picks Up Our Garbage Today

The president of East Bay Sanitary, the company that picks up El Cerrito's garbage and green waste, is Mark Figone, who shared this historic photo showing how his family's enterprise transported the garbage before trucks.

When Mark Figone, president of East Bay Sanitary, the company that collects El Cerrito's garbage and green waste, last Thursday, he brought along a large photo that hangs in his office. It shows his great-uncle (right) engaged in the same trade a century ago. Figone's great-grandfather, Francesco Figone, immigrated to Emeryville from Italy in the late 1890s and established a garbage-hauling business. Mark Figone is the fourth generation carrying on the trade.
