El Cerrito Celebration of the Arts Event on October 23, 2010

El Cerrito, CA: The City of El Cerrito Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) presents a free celebration of the Arts on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the El Cerrito City Hall and Plaza including dance performance, film screenings, a magic show, live music, a hands-on "creative re-use" activity, and City Hall Gallery Space exhibit and artists' reception. The event is free and light refreshments will be served. This event is part of Arts Month in El Cerrito. See schedule below for more details.

EL CERRITO CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS ON OCTOBER 23, 2010

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Starting at 2:00 p.m. "A Zest for Life:  Afro-Peruvian Music & Dance" Screening and Release Party

The day's events will start with the release party for Eve A. Ma's new documentary, "A Zest for Life:  Afro-Peruvian Music & Dance". The screening is co-presented by Palomino Productions, www.palominoproductions.com.

The film will be shown in the Council Chambers and will include a brief introduction by filmmaker Eve Ma. The one-hour documentary, "A Zest for Life: Afro-Peruvian Music and Dance," was produced and directed by Eve A. Ma (Palomino Productions), an El Cerrito resident. The documentary stars internationally famous Lalo Izquierdo and the Bay Area Afro-Peruvian performance group called "de Rompe y Raja." 

In creating "A Zest for Life," Eve A. Ma was assisted by Richard R. Lee of Sidewalks Entertainment, who was the studio director, and by CCTV (Contra Costa Television) who lent their studio for all the performance seen on the show.

Starting at 3:00 p.m. Magic Show by Magical Nathaniel

Sixteen-year-old magician, Magical Nathaniel, will perform from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Plaza outside City Hall. He has been interested in magic since he was three years old. An El Cerrito High School student, Magical Nathaniel performs regularly at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach in El Cerrito and private parties in the greater the Bay Area.

Starting at 3:40 p.m. Polynesian Cultural Dance Performance
Students from Kalena Gregory's Polynesian dance classes and Hui Hula o na Pu'u i ka Noe will perform in the Council Chambers from 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hui Hula o na Pu'u i ka Noe ("Hula group of the hills in the mist") is a Polynesian cultural dance group established in 1988 Kalena Gregory. The group dance regularly at the Aloha Festival at the Presidio in San Francisco, other ethnic festivals, parties, and lu'aus.

Starting at 4:00 p.m.  Artists Reception

In the City Hall Gallery Space, an artists' reception will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The exhibit is the Second City Employee Artist Show, showcasing artworks made by employees of the City of El Cerrito. The current exhibit features 18 works by 10 City employees.

Starting at 4:00 p.m.  Angel the Harpist

Angel the Harpist will perform during the Artists' Reception from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Angel Firestar has performed for California Arts Day events in El Cerrito since 2007.  She often plays harp at Kaiser Hospitals throughout the Bay Area.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. "In The Shadow   . . . Siberia: Total Solar Eclipses" Screening

JoAnn Gillerman will present her documentary about the August 2008 Total Solar Eclipse as viewed from Siberian Countryside. JoAnn Gillerman is a new media artist whose multimedia and video works integrate art, science, culture and technology. She produces interactive multimedia installations and exhibits for museums, science centers and other public venues. Her works have been shown nationally and internationally and are in the collections of major museums and science centers. The screening is co-presented by Viper Vertex, www.vipervertex.com.

Ms. Gillerman will be in attendance and provide additional narration for the film.

2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Creation Station

Through-out the event, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., attendees will have the opportunity to apply "creative reuse" and make their own unique artwork to take home. The "Creation Station" is a hands-on art activity located in the Plaza outside City Hall where attendees use donated items and art supplies collected from the community.  All ages are encouraged to get creative! 

Creative reuse incorporates materials that would otherwise be thrown away into pieces of art, transforming one person's "junk" into something with new value.

2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. City Hall Gallery Space Showcasing Employee Art

The City Hall Gallery Space currently features the Second City Employee Artist Show, showcasing 18 works made by 10 artists who are employees of the City of El Cerrito.

The Gallery Space is located in the loft hallway on the second floor of City Hall.  The ACC juries the rotating Gallery Space, which has had successful showings since its opening in October 2008, featuring local artists Charlotte Britton, Pam Fingado, Jana Bouc, Lin Salamo, Ed Kinney, Dug Waggoner, Joan Keyes, Sandi Potter, Lois Cantor, Kristin Satzman, Tomye', Helena Tiainen, and most recently, a collection of historic photos depicting local Japanese flower growers sponsored by the El Cerrito Historical Society.

2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. El Cerrito Historical Society Display

Through-out the event, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the El Cerrito Historical Society will have the new Dorothy and Sundar Shadi Historical Room open which features a display of some local historical artifacts. The Shadi Historical Room is located on the second floor of City Hall, adjacent to the Gallery Space. El Cerrito Historical Society members David Weinstein and Kathy McKinley will be on hand to answer questions.
