Make, See and Learn on October Saturdays

The Richmond Art Center is hosting a series of not-to-be-missed free (or low-cost) talks, demos and art-making events for you to make, see and learn!

Sat, Oct. 5: Raku Festival
Explore and learn about raku, a type of pottery that uses fire and smoke during firing to create unique designs. This day-long festival will celebrate all things raku and will feature lectures and demos by well-known ceramicists including Bay Area sculptor Andreé Singer Thompson, Bryan Higgins, Saadi Shapiro and Steven Allen along with taiko drumming, tea ceremonies, chabana tea flower arranging and so much more! Only $35 (includes 2 firing tickets and 1 raffle ticket). 10 am – 4 pm. Skip the lines, register today! 

Sat, Oct. 12: Free Quilting Talk & Demo
Interested in learning how to quilt with fabrics besides cotton? Experienced quilter Fern Royce will showcase quilts that use a combination of fabrics such as silk, rayon, wool, t-shirts and knits. Fern will then lead you through a demo on how to prepare non-traditional fabrics for quilts or wall hangings, including a discussion on various stabilizing products. Free. Sat, Oct 12, 1 – 4pm. Sat, Oct. 19: Free Artist Talk and Film Screening
Ask questions and be inspired by 83-year-old Oakland artist Bella Feldman and filmmaker Elizabeth Sher and enjoy a screening of “Bella Bella”, the 30-minute documentary on Bella’s life and work. The Richmond Art Center is hosting the first major survey of Bella Feldman’s work. Come see 50-years of her impressive steel and blown glass sculptures, collages and paintings. Talk will be moderated by San Francisco-based artist and art writer DeWitt Cheng. Free. Sat, Oct 19, 1 – 3pm.

Sat, Oct. 26: Skeletonfest, Free 
Get ready for the best Day of the Dead and Halloween art event. Skeletonfest is a free event filled with art-making activities such as creating funny, movable skeletons, sugar skulls and ghoulish screenprinted T-shirts. All ages. Wear a costume. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Free. Sat, Oct 26, 1-3pm.
