Events Bring Thrill of America's Cup to Richmond

The Richmond Art Center is hosting two events that celebrate the art of the America's Cup and bring the thrill of this prestigious race to the east side of the Bay.

On Saturday, July 20, the Richmond Art Center will host a special reception for 'Race for the Cup' from 5-7pm. Paintings of Bay Area yacht racing by Richmond artist and artist-in-residence for the 34th America's Cup, Jim Dewitt, will be on display alongside compelling photographs by Daniel Forster, a pre-eminent photographer of past America's Cup races. The exhibit also includes artifacts from previous races, such as trophies. This reception will also include a performance by jazz singer Ellen Robinson.

On Saturday, July 27 the Richmond Art Center will host a live painting event with Jim Dewitt from 1-4pm. Inquisitive spectators are invited to watch DeWitt work on his latest painting and ask him questions about his artistic process or the America's Cup races. Dewitt has gained broad recognition as one of America's premier marine artists, as well as a champion yachtsman. His passion for painting is reflected in the authority and honesty of his nautical works, which depict the thrill of racing. Dewitt's artistic career reached a new pinnacle when he was named America's Cup artist-in-residence for the 34th America's Cup.

The Richmond Art Center's Summer Exhibitions run through August 23, 2013 (Tues-Sat, 11am-5pm) and include 'Race for the Cup,' 'Artmatism: The Paintings of Bill A. Dallas' and the 'Annual Members' Show.'
