Which Local Bike and Pedestrian Projects Are Most Important?

There are currently almost $52 million worth of transit projects in Contra Costa County — including one in El Cerrito and three in Richmond — and only $24 million funding. So which projects should get the money? Share your thoughts.

Cities in Contra Costa County are lining up to grab some of the money available for transportation projects in the coming years. All of the projects are required to cover bicyclists and pedestrians, from improving pavements and striping bike lanes to installing street lighting and developing intermodal transit areas.

But the 21 projects total almost $52 million — more than double the $24 million available. So, which ones should get the go ahead?

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition is asking Contra Costa County residents to vote online for the top five projects in the area. El Cerrito has one project awaiting funding: the Ohlone Greenway station access. safety and placemaking improvements.

The project application gives this description:

"Ohlone Greenway widening, surveillance, crosswalk and landscaping improvements within the City's PDA and adjacent to two BART Stations to improve livability in these transit-rich neighborhoods and address pedestrian and bicycle access and safety concerns."

The cost is estimated at $3.4 million.

Several Richmond projects are also on the list, including improvements at the Richmond BART Station, a North Richmond pedestrian improvement project and Richmond 'ROUTE' (Regional Opportunities to Unite Transit and Employment).
