The Week Ahead: Cell Towers, Bond Sale, Street Play

Some of the meetings and activities happening in El Cerrito and Kensington this week

Staring Monday, the city's building division will not be fully staffed for four days.

The department's permit counter staff, building inspectors and code enforcement employees will be attending an annual code training.

Also on Monday, registration forms are due for the annual citywide garage sale on Oct. 12. The forms with $15 non-refundable deposit need to be delivered to El Cerrito City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave. by the end of the work day.

On Tuesday evening, the Contra Costa County Planning Commission will once again discuss six cell phone antennas proposed for installation in Kensington neighborhoods.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the county planning building, 30 Muir Road in Martinez.

On Wednesday evening, the West Contra Costa Unified School District board of education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

On the agenda is the proposed sale of up to $125 million in school bonds. The bonds were authorized with the passage of Measure D in June 2010 and Measure E in November 2012.

The board will also be asked to approve new contracts with two employee groups as well as a $4.9 million contract for 90 portable classrooms for Pinole Valley High School when the campus undergoes a renovation in fall 2014.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at LoVonya DeJean Middle School, 3400 Macdonald Ave., Richmond.

On Thursday evening, back-to-school nights will be held at high schools in the West Contra Costa Unified district. Those schools will have minimum days on Thursday.

On Saturday, the El Cerrito Library will hold its annual fall book sale. The event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library, 6510 Stockton Ave.

Next Sunday, Sept. 29, a portion of Ashbury Avenue and Key Route Boulevard will be closed for the Alberrito Street Play.

The event is co-sponsored by the cities of El Cerrito and Albany to encourage residents to get outside and be active.

Participants are invited to bring bikes, skates, croquet sets, basketballs, sketchbooks and other items.
