Eight Acres Added To El Cerrito Hill's Open Space

The Madera property was once scheduled to have homes built on it

A property once slated for development is now part of the open space in the El Cerrito Hills.

The sale of the eight-acre Madera property was final on Friday, according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The land links two city parks and creates a 90-acre greenbelt in the hills.

The El Cerrito Trail Trekkers and the Trust for Public Land organized the sale. The trust put up the $475,000 needed for the purchase. They'll hold the property until December 2014 when the city will have funds to acquire it, according to the Chronicle.

Early this year, the Trekkers asked the city to look into buying the parcel. A Martinez-based developer had city approval to build 11 homes on the property.
