Coyote Spotted In El Cerrito Neighborhood

The Department of Fish and Game offers advice on coyote encounters.

ECTrailTrekkers posted on El Cerrito Patch this week that neighbors spotted a coyote wandering through a residential neighborhood.

The coyote was spotted around 5:20 a.m. Monday in the area of Eureka and Seaview. Early reports also suggested the coyote was holding a limp cat in its mouth.

The California Department of Fish and Game offers the following advice to residents:
  • Do not feed the deer. It is illegal in California.
  • Do not allow pets outside -- particularly at dawn, dusk or night.
  • Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting coyotes, raccoons or opossums.

If you encounter a coyote:

  • Do not run.
  • Face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms.
  • If necessary, throw rocks or other objects at the coyote to scare it away.
  • If attacked, fight back.
