Are WCCUSD teachers computer literate?

Are our teachers computer literate?  I have to ask because my observation (shared by others) has been that few use internet technology to communicate with parents.  This comes at a day and age when often both parents/guardians are working, so could use help in monitoring their child’s progress, including completion of assignments, attendance, etc.

When asked why more teachers were not making maximum use of such technology, the WCCUSD Superintendent said the district is not allowed to force teachers to use such for their instruction, that it is a condition of employment to be addressed at the bargaining table.  I found this odd because when I went through the teacher credentialing program 15 years ago, there was an IT component, that it was one of our standards.  I simply assumed that if the Superintendent wants you to do it, that they will provide the training and that you will do it.   End of story.  The bargaining table?  Seriously?  It must be one ginormous, King Henry-sized table with so much being addressed there.

At Ohlone Elementary School, I see that one teacher has made maximum use of web technology, putting all assignments on her webpage.  I’m giving her a smiley face sticker!

There is a very powerful program called PowerSchool that allows teachers to communicate with parents in real-time.  This includes assignments, attendance, comments, etc.  I am told some teachers are using this program.  Why not all?

My dad is 81 years old.  For his job, he recently learned to use PowerPoint.  Yes, as I helped him, there was an occasional outburst of profanity, but he learned to do it.  No one made him do it.  There was no bargaining table.  He simply recognized the need to do so if he were to continue to be the best at what he does.

Don’t all teachers want to be the best at what they do?  If the training isn’t being made available, then that’s a different matter, and needs to be addressed promptly.
