New Library Campaign Extending Outreach

The recently formed group seeking to build support for a new El Cerrito Library announced this week that it is inviting community suggestions and planning public meetings this summer.

The recently launched grassroots campaign to replace El Cerrito's cramped and aging library on Stockton Avenue said this week that it's seeking ideas and planning community meetings this summer.

"Our outreach will be heating up this summer," said an announcement from the El Cerrito New Library Community Campaign

"Stop by our booth at El Cerrito’s July 4th Festival, 10-6 at Cerrito Vista Park," the notice said. "We’ll be conducting an informal survey, and gathering suggestions on what community members would like in a new library facility."

"Also, we will launch the first of a number of public, community meetings in August," the group said.

There has been strong community and official support in El Cerrito to rebuild the popular, city-owned, county-run library in a larger space, but funding is lacking. Its current home opened in 1949 and was expanded in 1960.

The group launched its Web site in April. Its organizing committee includes former city librarian Grace MacNeill, who's current president of the Friends of the El Cerrito Library, and other well-known local figures, including former El Cerrito City Manager Gary Pokorny, Stege Sanitary District board member Al Miller, and Tom Panas, an officer of the El Cerrito Historical Society.
