Letter: Dance Room at El Cerrito High Needs Heating, Cooling

In the latest of our series of letters from El Cerrito High freshman, Philisha Knox says it's not fair for dancers to suffer without heating or cooling while the school office gets heating and cooling.

Dear Editor,

My name is Philisha Knox and I am a freshmen attending El Cerrito High. I am writing to inform you that there is a situation concerning the dance room lacking a heating and cooling system.

El Cerrito gets very cold and windy. In El Cerrito how low or high the temperature is, that’s the temperature in the dance room. Being a dancer you can’t wear warm clothes because you will get hot and then take off your sweater and then once again you will be cold. Not only on cold days, warm days also, it doesn't affect the dance room as much, but when we work we get hot and have to use fans that the teacher supplies, which no longer work.

My point is that in the Office there is heating and cooling, and as dancers of El Cerrito High School, we feel unappreciated and would appreciate to have heating and cooling as the office does!

Thanks for your time and I hope you take it into consideration.

Philisha Knox
Freshman, El Cerrito High School

Note from Eric Jepson, who teaches ninth-grade Advanced English at El Cerrito High: El Cerrito High School students live with the hiccups and glories of our education system every day. Many of them are thoughtful about both the short-term and longer-term impacts of adult decision-making upon their lives. This is one in a series of letters to Patch written by freshmen at the school.

Why doesn't a brand new school have adequate heating/cooling systems? Are they not working? When will they be repaired? What the heck is going on, please?

We need an answer from the Admin.
Did they let the HVAC vendor off before he balanced the systems? Did the Architect forget to heat the dance room?
Does the Admin think that saving energy comes before students? -- well turn down the temp in the Admin office, first.
Interested citizens want to know.

A recent school board meeting agenda showed that thousands of dollars were to be spent on repairs to Madera ES. The SARC report for DeJean MS (posted on the district website) shows that facilities at that site are in need of repair. Both schools are newly rebuilt. The problems at these schools and at ECHS are probably not isolated incidents.
