East Bay Rattled by Yet Another Quake in the 3-to-4 Magnitude Range

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake gave an afternoon jolt to the East Bay Thursday, the fourth tremor of similar size centered in Oakland in the past 38 days.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the East Bay on Thursday afternoon, following three earlier similar-sized tremors in roughly the same area in Oakland since Aug. 23.

The 3:48 p.m. quake had a depth of 9.5 miles and was centered about a mile west of Mills College, near the intersection of High Street and Fairfax Avenue in Oakland, according to the USGS.

The quake came four days after a 3.5-magnitude earthquake centered near the Oakland Zoo. There were two similar-sized quakes — of magnitude 3.5 and 3.6 near the zoo on Aug. 23 and 24. The zoo is very near the Hayward Fault, which many seismologists say poses a significant risk of a major earthquake in the near future.
