Two earthquakes, the first at 3.6 magnitude and the second at 3.5, have struck at the same spot in Oakland near the zoo within an 11-hour period.

The second one struck at 9:57 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The latitude and longitude coordinates provided by the USGS — 37.751°N, 122.138°W — place the epicenter about a half mile east of the Oakland zoo in Oakland.

This morning's tremor came less than 11 hours after a 3.6-magnitude quake jolted El Cerrito and Kensington, and much of the rest of the East Bay, at 11:36 last night. The first quake was located at virtually the same spot, the USGS said.

There have been no reports of injury or serious damage from either earthquake.

The epicenter of the first quake was estimated to be about 5 miles deep and the second about 5.7 miles deep, according to the USGS.

The first quake came less than six hours after the East Coast of the United States was shaken by that region's strongest earthquake since World War II. That quake, centered in Virginia and registering 5.8 on the Richter scale, led to evacuations of the White House and Capitol.

Little damage was reported in the East Coast tremor outside of the epicenter at Mineral, Virginia, where several buildings were severely damaged, according the New York Times. It struck at 1:51 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday and also caused cracks to appear in the Washington Monument and broke off capstones from the National Cathedral, according to the Huffington Post.
