East Bay Rattled By 3.6 Quake Centered in Oakland

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake at 11: 36 p.m. last night, Tuesday, was centered in Oakland and rattled a broad swath of the Bay Area, including El Cerrito and Kensington.

El Cerrito and Kensington got a jolt at 11:36 last night, Tuesday, when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake centered in Oakland rattled the Bay Area.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor was located at a half mile east of the Oakland zoo, which would place it near the Hayward Fault. The epicenter was estimated to be about 5.7 miles deep, according to the USGS.

The quake came less than six hours after the East Coast of the United States was shaken by that region's strongest earthquake since World War II. That quake, centered in Virginia and registering 5.8 on the Richter scale, led to evacuations of the White House and Capitol.
